David Hayter Psychotherapy

David Hayter
Psychotherapist in Brighton

I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, registered with UKCP and BACP and also trained in EMDR. I believe that we are all influenced by the relationships we have had in the past, as well as by those we have in the present. The development, and the loss, of relationships affects how we are able to cope with stress and difficulties. I work by listening to the issues you bring, sometimes asking questions, sometimes making suggestions. Because these are your sessions you may ignore me, disagree with me or, hopefully, sometimes find my thoughts helpful.

Background & Psychotherapy Qualifications

I have a Masters in Clinical Science in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, from the University of Kent, and an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling from Birkbeck College, University of London. I have worked for the past sixteen years with children, young people and adults within schools, charities, universities and the NHS.

Currently I am a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton, responsible for the Post Graduate Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Psychodynamic Counselling. I am also in private practice and, until recently, was a psychological therapist with the Firefighters Charity. I spent the previous five years as director of the Waymark Counselling Service, in Canterbury, and was a senior lecturer in health at Canterbury Christchurch University. I have previously been employed as a counsellor by several organisations, including Barnardo's, Family Service Units and Thanet Counselling Services.

I am a registered psychotherapist with UKCP, a registered counsellor and psychotherapist with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am a member of the Canterbury Consortium of Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychotherapists (CCOPPP) and work within those organisations' ethical guidelines.

My Specialisms

I work with a wide range of issues and life situations but have a particular interest in indentity, self perception and in loss, in all of its forms. I love working with people to help them to find their voice and their place in the world, to support people to feel safe, comfortable, joyful in being themselves.

Approach to Psychotherapy & How I Work

I believe that we are all influenced by the relationships we have had in the past, as well as by those we have in the present. The development, and the loss, of relationships affects how we are able to cope with stress and difficulties. I work by listening to the issues you bring, sometimes asking questions, sometimes making suggestions. Because these are your sessions you may ignore me, disagree with me or, hopefully, sometimes find my thoughts helpful.

If you are thinking about making an appointment why not come for an initial session at £25 - this will give you the chance to talk about the issues you want to think about as well as decide if you feel that we could work together.

Psychotherapy and counselling are about creating a safe space in which you can explore the issues you are experiencing in your life. Everyone uses this space differently - some people talk about their early experiences, others focus more on recent experiences or their current situation. There is no right or wrong way of using therapy.
