Arts Therapist in London

I am a registered Art Therapist & Jungian Sandplay Therapist.
BAAT 22310 (British Association of Art Therapists) HCPC AS01427 (Health and Care Professions Council) AST (Association for Sandplay Therapy).

I have extensive experience of working in the NHS, voluntary organisations, education and in private practice.
In my private practice I provide a safe and protected space for you to express yourself both through image making and verbally. The Arts Therapies can be particularly helpful when it's difficult to talk about thoughts and feelings. Previous experience in art making is not required. I work with adults of all ages, genders, races, ethnicity, sexual orientations, and spiritual beliefs.

Background & Qualifications

I qualified as an art therapist at Hertfordshire University in 1999. I became a registered Jungian Sandplay Therapist in 2015 having previously trained with Dr B Turner, AST in the USA and with British and Irish Sandplay Society in the UK. I am a painter and print maker, I trained at Slade UCL in 1980, Pg Dip Fine Art.

My Specialisms

Arts Therapies can help with depression, anxiety, life transitions, relationship difficulties, communication difficulties, self-esteem issues, unresolved grief and loss, problematic relationships with food, alcohol and substances, struggles with addictions and the effects of abuse, neglect and trauma.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

My approach provides ways to use art materials for self-expression and healing which do not rely on artistic skills or prior experience. These include painting, sand play, touch drawing and clay as well as active imagination and dream work. These ways of working encourage contact with the imagination, and a way to accessing your own inner guidance.

An art therapy session usually consists of a period of art-making where you are free to make an image or be with what ever feels right for you. If you make an image the focus is on observing and resonating with the image rather than explaining it. The thoughts or feelings that arise during image making are acknowledged and given space to exist.

Sandplay Therapy accesses the unconscious and works at a deep level of the psyche. It is three dimensional using sand, water and miniature objects. Sandplay therapy was developed by Dora Kalff, a Jungian Analyst in Switzerland in the late 1930's and is based on Jungian psychology which believes that we have within us the resources to bring about wholeness, thus enabling us to find peace within ourselves and relate better to the outside world.
