Approach to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & How I Work

Therapies I can offer you
As a qualified Counsellor and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) I am able to provide therapy based on these unique approaches.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a talking therapy based on the understanding that what people think affects how they feel and how they behave. CBT practitioners work with clients to help them identify and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. CBT involves setting clear goals and is therefore directive and focused. Specific interventions are used to target the unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours that often cause distress. CBT is a here and now therapy that helps clients understand the factors maintaining anxiety or depression, in other words, what keeps it going. Using guided exploration clients are able to learn techniques that build variation into their thoughts (cognitions) and help develop more adaptive behaviours. This combined approach is highly effective in managing anxious feelings or low-mood symptoms.

What is CBT used for?
Studies have shown Cognitive therapies to be the most appropriate way to improve our coping responses for a range of common mental health problems such as depression as well as anxiety disorders including panic attacks, social anxiety, health anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, OCD, specific phobias and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Person-Centred Counselling
Counselling emphasises the importance of the therapeutic relationship to achieving success in therapy. Because of this Counsellors adopt certain "core" behaviours such as the ability to empathise, having a non-judgmental attitude and being genuine. Counselling is most effective for clients who feel they would benefit from sharing their concerns safely and confidentially with someone who is impartial and professional. Instead of the directive approach taken by CBT, counselling is client-led, although the therapist may often encourage the client to go deeper into his/her thoughts and then offer insights into the experiences being shared. Working in this way, the client and therapist aim to achieve change that is positive and lasting.

What is Counselling used for?
Counselling is often suited to helping with issues such as a coming to terms with a bereavement or in providing support for relationship difficulties. Other examples include managing a career change or reviewing the direction life is taking. Counselling offers clients a safe space to reflect on and validate experiences . It is less structured than CBT and does not tend to offer advice or address specific symptoms but is more about supporting the client as they talk through their problems and arrive at their own conclusions. If you feel that you would benefit most from being able to talk through your thoughts and feelings in this way then counselling may be the best approach for you.
