Emily McCoy Counselling

Emily McCoy
Counsellor in Fleet

My name is Emily McCoy. I am a fully qualified and experienced counsellor, offering effective therapy for adults and young people in a private, professional and confidential setting in central Fleet.

We can all face concerns and difficulties in our lives that affect us, our relationships and our work. We can be left feeling unable to cope, stuck, distressed or numb.

Counselling can make a real difference to how we think and feel about things and can help us to make the changes we want, for a happier life. It can also help us to accept things which are outside our control. People who come to counselling often find that it helps them feel more confident, more able to understand and accept themselves and better able to navigate life's challenges.

I have experience working with adults and young people covering a wide range of issues including anxiety, anger, depression, self harm, eating disorders, low self-esteem, relationship issues, work problems, procrastination, family problems, stress, loss and bereavement.

Contacting a counsellor can feel daunting. The first step is to make contact and to have an informal conversation about how things are for you and what you hope for from counselling.

Background & Counselling Qualifications

HE Diploma in Counselling (Distinction)
Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Skills
Certificate in Gestalt Counselling
Transactional Analysis 101
Working with Body in Therapy

In addition to my private practice I work within a sixth form college. I have previously counselled adults receiving support through local council services and children and young people at a boarding school.

As a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy I am bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

My approach to training is that I am always learning, either formally (by regularly going on courses) or informally from my clients and peers. It's important to me that I continue to learn and grow as a professional counsellor in order to provide the most effective support possible.

I receive regular supervision for work from a qualified counselling supervisor which ensures I am working to best meet the needs of my clients. I also hold professional insurance and a full CRB clearance.

You are in safe hands.

My Specialisms

Counselling or therapy is a regular time when you can talk about anything which matters to you.

What people talk about in therapy is hugely varied but here are some of the most common issues which people bring; anxiety, panic, depression/low mood, issues with food and eating, relationship problems, anger, rape or abuse, loss and bereavement, trauma, childhood issues, problems in families, bullying, identity issues, sexuality and sexual issues, feelings about self including low self worth, problems at work, dissatisfaction with life, a sense of numbness or nothingness.

I offer short term therapy and longer term work. I also offer CBT.

Approach to Counselling & How I Work

Counselling provides a regular time and space where you can talk about anything that is on your mind. It can be face-to-face or online.

Counselling takes place in a private and confidential place where you can explore aspects of your life and feelings, talking about them openly and freely in a way which is rarely possible with family and friends. This is possible because counsellors are trained to really listen, to put themselves aside in order to understand your perspective and to be non-judgemental.

I will not offer you advice or tell you what I think is best for you. My role is to help you explore issues in your life (and in yourself) so that you can decide what is best for you. I bring expertise in listening, empathy and problem solving. You bring the knowledge about your life and what has worked for you (or not) to date. In our sessions we will work together to identify problems and possible solutions.

Counselling works most effectively when there is a relationship of trust, honesty and support. Counselling can help you to come to terms with past and present experiences. At times, counselling can be challenging but its benefits can be life changing.

8 week Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) programme available - £480

CBT can be a helpful model of therapy for some people. It is particularly effective for issues around anxiety and panic. People can also find it useful if they are looking for a practical, focused model of therapy or if they are interested in a "life coach" approach to creating some change in their lives.

If you want to find out more about CBT then please contact me for more information.
