Counsellor in Bury St Edmunds

Searching for a counsellor can be scary and I realise that if you are visiting my website, you may be doing so in search of some help, maybe you are suffering some sort of emotional turmoil, stress, anxiety or depression which seem to be taking over your life.

It probably feels like no one can help you right now, however over a decade, a life changing event caused me to re-evaluate my future and what I needed and wanted from life. With the help of the people closest to me and a very gifted counsellor, I began to move forward and understand what makes me who and what I am and I learnt how to look after myself, that was really hard work and I remember thinking what does that actually mean!

I wondered how my counsellor had managed to help me so much and how it must feel to help others in the same way. So that was my career path set and off I went to university to ensure I could do my clients justice with the skills I had learnt and knowledge and understanding.

My experience has taught me that clients need to be respected, not judged and really heard knowing their confidence will not be broken. I try to guide not direct.

Alongside the above, counsellors should also be expected to:

Help you learn to look after yourself emotionally
Help you develop coping strategies
Look at recurring patterns within your life which stop you from
getting where you want to go or the type of person you want to be
Provide the hope that things can get better as they did for me!

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

I am an Integrative Counsellor with a particular focus on the relational aspect of the work. I endeavour to offer my clients a safe and confidential place to discuss their worries and concerns which enables them to move forward at their own pace.

What does integrative mean?

Individuals think, feel and react in different ways and by integrating different theories; it can bring about change in their lives. An integrative Counsellor can work with each person to produce a unique therapy adapted to suit what that individual client needs. Below are some of the approaches that an integrative counsellor may use.

Person Centred Counselling offers a non-judgemental therapeutic relationship between client and counsellor, in which the client can explore what they need and want, and how they can achieve their goals.

Psychodynamic Counselling works by bringing unconscious processes and emotions into consciousness; there is an emphasis on the influence of the past and on recurring patterns of behaviours and relationships.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works by examining the ways that thoughts, feelings and behaviours can affect each other, and how different aspects of these can be changed to solve specific problems.
