Gemma Birch

Counsellor in Southport

My counselling approach is person-centred. I believe you are the expert on you, but life likes to surprise us from time to time which throws us off balance, and we need help and guidance to get us back on track. I also use mindfulness methods when suitable to the client.

I understand just how powerful talking through things can be. It can help find a way through the challenges that life throws at us. I offer a time out and give people space to talk, to reflect on their difficulties and/or anxieties and to explore self development, where no issue is too trivial. In my work, I have found that people experience counselling differently and need different types of support. Therefore, I offer face to face counselling and the advantage of text/phone counselling so it is accessible for everyone. By facing issues, often together, we can develop ways to improve your general wellbeing.

Alongside my personal practice, I'm also a motivational speaker and mental health blogger.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

I know what it's like to feel lost, out of touch and feel the fear of the unknown.

In 2012, I became paralysed from the waist down due to a rare disorder called Guillaine Barre Syndrome. This all began from having food poisoning on holiday.

After spending a year in hospital, learning to walk again and going through my own mental health battles, I completed my Psychology degree and the motivation to become a Psychotherapist grew even more.

My GBS symptoms were very visible, but it came with a lot of mental health symptoms that were invisible.
