Broadly I can be said to be centred on you and I work hard to provide each person with what suits them at the time we are working together. People have said that the sessions are enjoyable and challenging and we have had times for tears and for laughter. It is good to share the process of moving forwards and I look forwards to a person making progress on all fronts.
I trained originally as an addictions counsellor at Clouds House and Broadway Lodge and I worked for 6 years, with alcohol addiction. Since then I studied for an MSc in Counselling and had training in CBT and Narrative Therapy and recently in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy which has recently been accepted by NICE. I continue to explore and become knowledgeable about the discoveries of neuroscience and all the advances in psychological work.
Relationships: This is the basis of much of the work I do. It requires an understanding of how a person came to understand the fundamental relationships in life and how it it the time to make new choices. Many of my clients have suffered from co-dependancy issues in their relationships and feel much more empowered as a result of the counselling work we do together.
Anxiety and Depression: There are a number of ways in which coping strategies will be very helpful in learning how to deal with anxiety and depression. It is often necessary to work with earlier trauma, and I have experience of working with traffic accidents and other traumatic events.
Addictions: There are a wide variety of ways people can use behaviours to ease their difficulties, so I have been concerned with alcohol, drugs, recreational or prescriptive, eating disorders, gambling and OCD.
I tend to think first about what the client needs and to form a supportive and helpful relationship with them. My training and my years of experience inform what I do, but the client affects how this works out. My experience with narrative work helps me to listen to the story from them and to expand their understanding of it and introduce other aspects of knowledge and understanding which supports their capacity to bear the pain they have been involved in. The thinking process we all have contributes to the way we talk to ourselves and people are a lot happier when they have come to terms with the critical voices they have listened to in their heads, we all feel we are responsible for doing everything right and it is often easier when we accept that this is not a perfect world. Addiction comes in many shapes and as well as alcohol addiction, I will see clients who have OCD problems, sex addictions of different kinds and avoidances of various situations. I would like to work with you in a way that suits you and sees you going forwards in the direction you want to go, and removes the obstacles you have encountered.
I am a Buddhist and this plays a part in how I see situations, and sometimes in the way we might find a way out...
