Julia Duffin

Counsellor in Biggleswade

I have previously worked many years as a District Nurse, and latterly as a Community Macmillan Specialist Nurse. During this time I found caring for people and their families nearing the end of their lives challenging, but extremely rewarding.

Having cared for them whilst they struggled with an unknown future, at a time when they were anxious, depressed, fearful and grieving, I felt helpless. So I decided to try to develop my own awareness and skills in supporting them through their struggles at this very difficult time in their lives. This eventually led me to train in counselling therapy, which assisted me in becoming increasingly aware of the impact our mental well being has on our physical health in our day to day lives.

I have undergone my own personal therapy, which helps me understand the difficulties as well as the sense of relief that you may feel when in the clients' chair. You finally have someone who can listen to you, your fears, worries, concerns, and is there only for you during your session.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

Counselling is a safe place to explore your personal issues. My aim is to provide such a counselling experience for you. I work in a compassionate and collaborative way, allowing you time and space in which to explore the issues which concern you.
I work mostly psychodynamically:-
The psychodynamic therapy approach seeks to increase your self-awareness and understanding of how the past has influenced your present thoughts and patterns of relating. This type of therapy can help you deal with emotional and psychological difficulties by taking a compassionate, honest and serious look at what troubles you.

I will encourage you to explore any unresolved issues and conflicts, to talk about important people and relationships in your life. You can then begin to make changes in the way you understand and manage your thoughts and feelings, gradually changing how you relate to yourself and others in a positive, real way.

Therapy may be time limited, using, 8 or 12 sessions to work through a specific problem or an issue that you decide to work on. Or we can work in an open-ended way thinking about a wider range of difficulties, working towards achieving a more sustainable change for you. This would be agreed between us at the beginning and we would plan the ending by reviewing your progress periodically, ending when you are ready.
