Julie Vale

Counsellor in Gloucester

Hi, My name is Julie and I'm a qualified, registered, accredited (ACC) counsellor (MBACP) and a qualified supervisor and trainer. I've been counselling for nearly 20 years. I'm based in the Forest of dean, on the borders of Hereford and Monmouth
I enjoy counselling and helping people come through difficult situations with new insights and coping strategies after the counselling, using CBT and other modalities.
I have seen many relationships helped and people with anxiety, depression, abusive backgrounds, anger issues or bereavements work through difficult pasts or situations and start afresh with new confidence and understanding. Many have seen real reduction in anxiety, panic attacks or depression after only a few sessions.

Life brings many challenges, bereavement, relationship difficulties , stress or maybe caring for an elderly relative or a sick child. Counselling provides a safe, non judgemental space to look at the impact of things like this and work through them.

Background & Qualifications

My background is in social care and the voluntary sector. I am a qualified social worker (CQSW) with experience in children and family issues , mental health, family breakdown, fostering and adoption and working with the elderly. I am also an experienced, registered, accredited counsellor and an experienced , qualified supervisor.
I've also run an art group in a local prison and seen people helped through learning new skills.
I then went on to retrain as a counsellor gaining a Post grad Diploma in counselling from Nottingham University in 1998.
I have since gained other qualifications such as a Diploma Counselling children and young people, Post grad Certificate in Supervision (Newport Uni)
and Training trainers diploma as well as a diploma in working with parents of Teenagers.
I have managed a charity offering counselling to young people and families for 10 years, at CEO level for last 6 years, leaving 2 years ago to concentrate on my private practice.
I have supervised counsellors who are training and qualified both in groups and individually and helped many through accreditation.

My charges are reasonable and can be negotiated if on a low income.

My Specialisms

I have a specialist qualification in working with children and young people.
I also have training in family therapy and working with art and play as part of the overall therapy. I also work successfully with anger, anxiety and loss.
I work with couples and families but also enjoy working with individuals. I find looking at attachment issues particularly useful then
I am also a trained spiritual director.

I am an experienced supervisor and can offer mentoring or supervision to those at management level too.
I work with people who have depression, anxiety, anger issues, relationship issues (couples or families or work) Those who have loss issues or are dealing with difficult caring situations too.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

I am trained integratively which means I can use several modalities to suit the client and not fit the client' s needs into a specific model.
I have training in CBT, using art therapeutically, psychodynamic approaches and working with attachment. I am also very aware of systems approaches and how we are all part of a wider system which has an impact on many aspects of our relationships.
I work to a person centred model, which respects those coming to me and uses a non judgemental approach to all who come. Many of my referrals are from client recommendations. I believe the person coming for counselling has the answers and just needs help to find them. I have been told I'm very good at listening and helping the client find ways forward, build their confidence and help them to process whatever crisis or painful situation has brought them to counselling giving them strategies to move forward. I also explain reasons why they may feel the way they do, which many clients have found particularly helpful.
My service is called Kairos counselling, which is about the right time of seeking help, processing pain and difficulties and drawing out the inner strengths.
The first session is about you finding out if you feel the counsellor is the right person to help you. I hope I will be, but if not I want you to be able to feel you can take something useful away and still find whoever that may be. It's about you, not me. Let me help where I know I can.
