Kim Smith
Counsellor in Plymouth

Many people find it emotionally difficult dealing with the uncertainties, stresses, and life generally, this has been made more difficult given the current and ongoing Covid situation; even those who normally feel like they are coping with life are starting to struggle. I am a member of both the British Association of Counsellor and Psychotherapists (BACP) (Pending) and the Association of Christian Counsellors, this means that I adhere to the BACP ethical guidelines as a practitioner.

Background & Counselling Qualifications

I have been counselling as both a student and qualified counsellor for a total of 4 years. I started my counselling at an agency the worked with Adult Survivors of childhood sexual abuse. My Master's Degree requires me to be in a placement and my placement is with a Pregnancy Crisis Centre working with anything relating to difficult pregnancy issue, termination, and loss. Both placements have given me a good working knowledge of many issues faced by clients on a day-to-day basis.
BSc Psychology, Level 4 dip Therapeutic Counselling, I am currently reading for MA Integrative Counselling, CPD courses on Stress, Trauma, PTSD, Addiction, Bereavement and Loss, Self Esteem, Depression.

Approach to Counselling & How I Work

My core therapeutic model is the Person-Centred Approach; however, I see each client as an individual and have received training in other counselling models so I can tailor my approach to best suite your needs. I aim to provide you with a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space where I will give you empathy, understanding and support to work through your emotion dis-ease and facilitate your being able to find a resolution you are comfortable with going forward. In the first session I like to chat with you about what has brought you to counselling, to enable us to get to know each other and to give you a chance to decide if you feel we can work together. At the end of the session there is no obligation for you to book further sessions if you do not wish too. I like to work at your pace so that you do not feel overwhelmed or rushed as coming to counselling takes courage (well done for getting this far). I welcome any questions you might have about the counselling process and any concerns you might have about counselling.
