My therapeutic approach is psychodynamic, working face to face with individuals over 17 years of age. Psychodynamic therapy focuses on unconscious processes in the internal world as they are experienced in dreams or acted out in personal behaviour, relationships and repeating destructive habits. The way in which we manage relationships, distress, anxiety, illness, mourning and other forms of loss can depend on how that has been managed for us by early care givers and I strive to provide a totally supportive, empathic, dependable and confidential relationship in which you can feel safe to talk openly without fear of judgement. The relationship between therapist and client is fundamental to successful therapy as aspects of your relationships with those closest to you in life can be re-enacted and worked with to resolve your difficulties. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are to develop your self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior and to find ways of changing entrenched habits, attitudes and behaviours towards a better life experience.
I work by mutual agreement in the way that best suits your needs. This can be either short term with a fixed number of sessions to address a specific issue which troubles you, or we can work on an open-ended basis meaning there is no set time limit and we have the opportunity to explore more deeply the roots of your issues. In short term working my approach can support you in examining unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and manifest themselves in the need and desire to over eat or abuse exercising, alcohol, recreational drugs. At times I draw on other areas of therapeutic learning in order to tailor to your specific needs as each therapeutic relationship is a very individual experience.
I work face to face in once or twice weekly appointments of 50-minutes, held wherever possible at the same time and day each week. An initial one hour assessment of whether ongoing work could be helpful is refunded if we decide not to go ahead with ongoing work.
