Counsellor in Reading

I am a psychotherapist with over nine years experience in private practice in the Reading area. I am registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

• In addition, I am a member of both the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the Universities Psychotherapy and Counselling Association (UPCA) and abide by the professional code of ethics of these bodies.

• I have over twenty years experience of working as a therapist in the NHS and I'm currently employed as a Senior Psychotherapist in NHS Psychological Services. I have also worked as a Senior Counsellor in GP surgeries.

• As well as practicing as a therapist I have been involved in the training and supervision of counsellors on BACP-accredited courses for over twenty years. I taught on a BACP-accredited MA in Counselling at the University of Reading for over eight years.

• Prior to practicing as a psychotherapist I worked as both a general nurse (RGN) and a psychiatric nurse (RMN). I went on to train nurses at a London Teaching Hospital.

My Specialisms

I am able to offer help to people with a range of difficulties such as:

• Depression

• Stress

• Anxiety

• Bereavement and loss

• Low self esteem and identity issues

• Relationship problems

• Eating disorders - I have a particular interest in helping people who have issues with eating and I have worked in eating disorder units in both the NHS and private sectors.

As well as offering help to individuals I am also able to provide counselling to couples who are experiencing difficulties in their relationship.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

• I adopt a psychodynamic approach to my understanding of an individual's difficulties but will adapt my techniques to the needs of the individual and this may include using some cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) skills to enable an individual to work through their difficulties.

• I am able to work with individuals on a short term basis offering Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) - i.e. 6 to 16 sessions - where the work would focus on current interpersonal issues that are causing emotional difficulties.

• Alternatively I can work on a longer term, more in-depth basis (for example, for six months or longer) which aims to help people gain a deeper understanding of their emotional difficulties. This will often involve looking at past experiences.•
