Jo Howard

Massage Therapist in High Wycombe

Jo is a Massage Therapist specialising in Myofascial Therapy. This approach allows her to focus many years of professional experience in the areas of health and sport in a treatment which addresses the body-wide effects of pain, tension and movement restrictions.

Background & Qualifications

Jo trained originally as a physiotherapist, qualifying in 1990 with a Graduate Diploma from Coventry School of Physiotherapy. She then worked for 10 years as a physiotherapist within the NHS, covering areas of speciality including chronic pain, spinal injury & orthopaedics. In 1995 she gained an MSc in Physiotherapy from University College London which allowed her to further her particular interest in the treatment of musculoskeletal injury. In 2000 Jo left the physiotherapy profession to focus on family and other interests, but never lost her fascination with the body and the ways in which we can cultivate good health.

In 2009, seeking to re-engage with bodywork from a more integrated perspective, Jo retrained as a Massage Therapist, building on her previous experience. In 2011 she undertook additional training in Integrated Myofascial Therapy, allowing her to more effectively address problems with body alignment and posture alongside direct muscle work. In 2016 she completed an Advanced Clinical Diploma in Integrated Myofascial Therapy.

Jo has also worked in the past as a swimming teacher and volunteer coach with Wycombe District Swimming Club, having spent many years in a pool herself as a competitive swimmer.
As a therapist she worked with Wycombe Phoenix athletics team from 2010 -2014.

Jo holds the following qualifications and affiliations:

Advanced Clinical Diploma in Integrated Myofascial Therapy
BTEC Diploma in Sports Massage and Sports Treatments
BTEC Diploma in Holistic Massage
Accredited practitioner in Kinesiology Taping

My Specialisms

Myofascial therapy is a type of massage directed at the fascia (connective tissue of the body) as well as the muscles which lie within. It addresses issues arising from altered body alignment caused by poor posture, pain, chronic muscle tension, work, sport and injury. This integrated approach looks at patterns of tension in the whole body, recognising that focusing on a single body part may not address the root cause of pain. Combining myofascial work with a variety of other massage and soft tissue techniques, Jo has developed a treatment approach she has found to be powerful and effective.
