I have been an accredited counsellor/psychotherapist with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) since 2003. I was inspired to train and work as a counsellor after my own experience of receiving counselling helped me at a key time in my life. Following an initial placement for several years at a busy local GP's practice in the late 1990s, I have worked privately for more than 20 years to help people from all walks of life deal with challenging emotional and behavioural issues, very often trauma and stress-related. I have a special interest in working with victims of adverse childhood experiences, trauma and PTSD and closely follow developments in this field. I have particular experience in helping business and professional people in demanding jobs who are facing life or career crises and transitions, and I frequently work with clients who suffer from anxiety-related issues, depression and low self-acceptance. I also draw on 20 years of experience in mediating disputes of all kinds to help people facing conflict and relationship problems move forward positively in their lives.

At a time of information overwhelm, I follow the latest international research and knowledge about health and wellbeing so I can provide well-informed, reliable and practicable guidance to clients, where appropriate. I recognise that there is no "one-size-fits-all" and prioritise understanding each individual's particular background, needs and objectives. I am committed to improving access to therapy in the UK.

Based in west London, I work from home in a bright, private studio just off Brook Green, which is within ten minutes' walk of both Hammersmith and Shepherds Bush underground stations and equally close to over ground rail services at Shepherds Bush and Olympia. Regular bus services (295, 283, 220, 72) stop at Brook Green, within 3 minutes of the house. Street parking is also available on a meter between 08:30 and 18:30 daily.

Background & Qualifications

I am married with a family, living in west London. In addition to working as a therapist, I regularly mediate commercial, employment and educational disputes between organisations and individuals. I also mediate special educational needs cases.

Since 1977, I have worked extensively in international business consultancy, government service (Foreign and Commonwealth Office), the legal profession and alternative dispute resolution. Besides my native English, I speak fluent Portuguese. I was accredited as a commercial and employment mediator by CEDR (the Centre for Dispute Resolution in London) in 1999 and completed the ADR Group's Family Foundation Mediator Training, endorsed by the UK College of Family Mediators, in 2004.

Besides my accreditation with the BACP, which sets standards for therapeutic practice in the UK, I am a UKRC Registered Independent Counsellor with the following qualifications:
European Society of Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS) General Certificate in Psychotraumatology, 2018
Certificate in coaching skills under the International Coaching Federation's accredited coach training programme, 2009;
Diploma in Stress Management, 2003;
Advanced Certificate in Cognitive-Behavioural Approaches, 2003;
Certified Practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, 2002;
Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling, 2001.

In addition I have a Bachelor of Law degree from Aberdeen University in 1977 and a Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing in 1993.

I work extensively with clients who suffer from stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, low self-acceptance and relationship issues.

I recognise that most of us face setbacks in our lives and my goal is to enable all my clients to find or restore the ease of being and enjoyment of life which they aspire to.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

My approach to therapy is informal, flexible and collaborative. A relationship based on trust and mutual respect is key to effective counselling, so my priority in our first meeting is always to establish if my client and I can work well together. The conversation is a confidential opportunity to focus carefully and without judgment on whatever is getting in my client's way and to assess how this can best be addressed.

While strongly influenced by my training in person-centred counselling and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), I do not believe that "one size fits all". I take a close interest in attachment theory and research (underlining the importance of early relationships) and increasingly use EMDR and other emotionally focused approaches to support my clients. My work is always guided by a careful assessment of clients' individual needs and what works best for them, based on a strong therapeutic relationship.

I charge £75 a session for individuals. Meetings usually last 50 minutes, but I like to allow up to an hour for the first assessment session. For couples I recommend sessions of 90 minutes at a cost of £120. As many of my clients are in full time employment, I offer meetings at weekends and outside working hours during the week.

I offer both long and short-term face-to-face work, online and telephone counselling, and time-limited therapy. Although I like to see people face to face - especially for initial meetings - with the current lockdown that is not possible so I see clients using Zoom, Skype and Face Time, as well as the telephone.
