My name is Sushma Maddison Tweed, I am a BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist with over 30 years experience of working in mental health in both the NHS and for the past 10 years in my private practice. I have been specialising in CBT practice since 2006 and obtained a Master of Science (MSc) in CBT. I have completed training in Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) which is used specifically for multiple/single traumas, as well as being a qualified EMDR practitioner (EMDR) which is found to be most effective for treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and a large range of mental health conditions including phobias, different anxiety disorders, grief, low self-esteem, complex trauma, chronic pain.

Background & Qualifications

I originally qualified as a registered nurse (Registered Mental health Nurse-RMN). Since qualifying as an RMN I have completed my BSc (Hons) degree in Health Studies, a diploma in Drug & Alcohol studies, a Kings Fund Managers programme (which was very useful when I managed various mental health services), Supervision course and Solution Focussed Therapy course (University of Hertfordshire).

Since 1993 I have worked in the community in a variety of clinical settings such as community mental health teams, assertive outreach services, forensic services, specialist services such as drug and alcohol services and as a Nurse Consultant in a community eating disorder service. I currently work for the Bedfordshire NHS Wellbeing Service (IAPT) and in my private practice.

The specific area of my interest lies in working with people who have complex trauma issues as well as severe depression and anxiety using EMDR, I like to combine modalities to help the individual to gain a holistic understanding to their issues to gain maximum awareness and benefit from the approaches used.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a time limited intervention, and is considered to obtain a quicker response than some other approaches, such as psychoanalytical/person centred therapy, which is considered a longer term approach to problems and difficulties. The average number of CBT sessions clients' require can be between 10-16 sessions. This may vary depending on the nature of the problem or disorder. However, the aim is for you to have sufficient tools to become your own "therapist" and improve your emotional well being after receiving professional CBT.

Studies suggest that both EMDR and trauma-focused CBT can currently be regarded as effective forms of treatment for adult clients with PTSD/complex traumas. EMDR therapy treatment works using an eight phase treatment protocol . The overall goal of the therapy is for the client to process old traumatic/difficult memories/events and create new more healthier ones to obtain full recovery. With EMDR disturbing memories/events are processed using eye movements, similarly with CBT the client typically goes through imaginal exposure and/or to practice in vivo exposure.

Psychosocial support can be more open-ended intervention that is often agreed in collaboration with the client and therapist taking into consideration a variety of contextual factors surrounding the problem/issue. In most cases, it takes a number of sessions before the mental health support starts to make a difference, and a regular commitment is required to make the best use of the therapy.
