Sarah Donoghue

Naturopath in Newquay

Hello I'm Sarah. I'm the owner / operator of Alchemilla Apothecary, an integrative wellness clinic on the Cornish Coast. I've had the pleasure of supporting clients in my capacity as a registered herbalist for the last 13 years.

Herbalism is the oldest and most widely used system of healing in the world. Our bodies are well adapted to nature's medicines. Unlike the allopathic approach to treating illness, herbalists do not merely address symptoms, but use botanical medicines to invigorate the person's vital force so that the body can heal itself from within.

Herbal medicine can be used to treat a wide range of health complaints including;

• Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis
• Emotional wellbeing including anxiety, depression and panic attacks
• Hormonal issues such as PCOS, peri-menopausal symptoms and acne
• Digestive complaints such as IBS, acid reflux and candida

Importantly, herbal medicine works really well for long standing health concerns that have not responded well to conventional treatment or do not have a well-defined cause such as;

• Lack of energy and motivation
• Poor sleep
• Low mood and unexplained anxiety
• Allergies

Working together, we'll identify the root cause of the problem and create an individual health plan to help put your body in the best possible position to heal itself.

Background & Qualifications

I spent five years studying herbal medicine and naturopathic practice at the College of Naturopathic Medicine at Regent's College London. During this time I researched and wrote about a wide range of topics which prepared me well for my service as an herbalist. This included:

Phytochemistry (the chemical structure of plants and what effects these substances have on the human body)
Ethnobotany - the scientific study of the traditional knowledge and customs of a people concerning plants and their medical, religious, and other uses
Wild-crafting and gardening, growing plants from seed and learning to identify plants in the wild
Formulation and preparation of botanical medicines. The intricate art of prescribing and preparing herbal medicines for use
Iridology, Chinese tongue diagnosis, naturopathic cleansing, and holistic nutrition
In addition to my studies, I also completed 500+ hours of clinical practice working in a variety of diverse herbal clinics and dispensaries across the UK.

Every year, as part of my practice and commitment to my profession, I undergo additional training to ensure I'm always up to speed with any new developments in the herbal world. I am also an active member of the Herb Society, and have written a number of articles on the topic of herbal medicine which have been published in a variety of journals and magazines.

My Specialisms

My special area of interest is supporting people with generalised anxiety, panic attacks and PTSD. I'm committed to promoting the use of herbs and natural lifestyle interventions for supporting emotional and mental wellbeing.

I also manufacture my own range of botanical skin care products and offer specialist programmes for a range of skin conditions such as eczema, acne and psoriasis.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

Herbal medicine works best when underpinned by lifestyle and dietary changes that provide the optimal situation for the vital force to mount a response. However, making these changes can be difficult. To help you feel fully supported, I offer a free email service to keep you focused, motivated and on track in between appointments. I've found this makes a huge difference to the success of an individual wellness plan.

Working together, we'll identify the root cause of your health issue and create an individualised plan to put your body in the best possible position to heal itself.
In addition to this guidance, you'll receive a customised herbal prescription which may take the form of a tincture, tea, capsule, cream, salve or powder. As every person is unique, no two prescriptions are ever the same. Your prescription will adapt and change to reflect the healing process, supporting you at each and every stage of your wellness journey.
