Claire Merriweather
Osteopath in St Albans

I am a registered Osteopath working in St Albans from a group practice with 3 other Osteopaths. I have been qualified since 1999 and since have enjoyed working in this busy practice treating a wide range of patients from young children to the elderly, treating conditions affecting the body from top to toe such as sports injuries, pregnancy-related problems, postural and mechanical issues, muscular, ligamentous and joint conditions, headaches, arthritis and stress- related aches and pains.
I live in St Albans with my husband and two young children who attend the local schools.

Background & Osteopathy Qualifications

I graduated from the University of Manchester in 1993 with a Bsc Hons degree in Biochemistry and whilst I initially embarked on a cliinical PhD in cancer studies, after a year I made the decision to retrain as an Osteopath. I qualified as an Osteopath with a BSc Hons degree from the British School of Osteopathy, London in 1999 and since have worked at several practices in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire but mainly in St Albans.

My Specialisms

I do not specialise in one area or type of treatment but instead work osteopathically to treat as appropriate using a wide range if techniques and applying the principles of osteopathy to all people and conditions that consult me, I work in a structural and functional approach together with cranial techniques, as appropriate. Exercises, stretches, postural and life-style advice form an important part of the treatment and the patient's own role in helping their recovery.

Approach to Osteopathy & How I Work

The beauty of osteopathy is that it can be applied to the entire musculoskeletal system from the head to the toes, using the basic principles that the structure of the body will govern the way it functions and vice versa: hence, if we work to improve the musculoskeletal system structurally, so the function will be positively affected too. Osteopathy recognises that the body has an innate ability to heal itself, and it is the role of the osteopath to optimise the structure and function of the body to allow this to happen, working through the soft tissues and joints, affecting the blood and nervous supplying and the local tissue fluid mechanics.
