Psychotherapist in Brighton

If you are you looking for a counsellor/therapist who can offer genuine warmth and a welcoming space, combined with many years of professional experience, then I may be right for you. I offer short or long term counselling, psychotherapy and supervision tailored to your individual needs. I came to a career in counselling and therapy after working for many years as a nurse and senior lecturer in nursing. My route into the profession began in 2003 with a post graduate certificate in transpersonal psychology. An interest in the person-centred/humanistic approach to therapy led to my discovery of Psychosynthesis.

Over the years I have worked successfully with men and women of all ages with a wide range of presenting problems. See list below.

Background & Qualifications

I am a BACP accredited Psychosynthesis counsellor/psychotherapist and

Post-graduate diploma in Psychosynthesis Psychotherapy (University of East London)

Post graduate certificate in transpersonal psychology and a post-graduate certificate in Counselling Supervision (University College Plymouth St Mark and St John). Diploma in Individual and Group Supervision via Cascade Associates.

Qualified in EMDR and EFT (energy focused therapy or also known as emotional freedom technique)

In addition, I have a first degree in Nursing and a Masters degree in health care management. I have fifteen years experience as a senior lecturer in health care at the University of Brighton. I also have ten years experience of therapy work in both public and private settings. I have worked with clients of all ages from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. Brighton and Hove is a vibrant city rich in culture and diversity. With this in mind, I particularly welcome Lesbian,Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender/Transexual clients along with those from Black and Ethnic minorities. People with disabilities are welcomed and I will try to arrange disabled access, please email me to discuss in advance.

Psychosynthesis is a holistic form of therapy which upholds the notion that people have mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects to their being. I acknowledge and respect these elements when I work with you. Psychosynthesis is essentially, a person-centred approach in that we work in partnership on the issues that are most important to you, session by session.

My Specialisms

I am a trained trauma therapist specialising in EMDR and have worked with clients experiencing PTSD and CPTSD, as well as those with attachment disorders. I also incorporate EFT into trauma work.

I also offer integrative supervision and have been supervising since 2011. Prior to this I offered one to one and group supervision to health professionals/trainee's and managers in the NHS via my previous role as Senior Lecturer in Health Care Management. This supervisory/facilitative role in higher education spanned 15 years.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

I usually suggest we start with three sessions so that I can assess your needs and tailor the work to you personally. During these initial 3 sessions, I will invite you to tell your story so that I can get a picture of how life has been and your feelings about it. You may feel you want to talk about your life and your problems now, rather than in the past. That is fine, what is essential, is that you guide where we go and you control what we talk about, and the depth and pace at which you want to explore issues. This is important in that it helps me to understand and assess how we might work together in the future and I get to know what the priorities are for you. The other purpose of this is that you can begin to feel safe enough to discuss the things that are troubling you most. This safety is paramount and is the foundation of a trusting, confidential and professional relationship in which healing can begin. If it is something you feel comfortable with, we can devise an action plan to look at how we could work together on your problems. This may be verbal or even in a written format if you prefer. Clients sometimes find artwork helpful; or sandtray with objects (Gestalt work) as a means of expressing difficult feelings for example. We might work with visualisations if that is something that appeals to you. The most important thing is that you decide what feels right for you. I will suggest a review after three or six sessions, so that we can take a step back from what we have talked about and discuss what is helping in particular, and you can (if you wish) give me feedback as to whether you are getting what you want from the relationship. If you are, and you wish to continue, we can keep reviewing as we go along.

I am equally committed to you requiring just six sessions of counselling as I am to those who I have worked with psycho- therapeutically for many years.
