The range of services I offer are tailored to best suit your needs and preferences. I can also provide therapy in Italian.
What to expect during the first session
The first appointment is a psychological assessment appointment. It is usually helpful to meet for a longer session (90 minutes) to explore what approach may be best suited and feel comfortable for you and decide on a treatment plan. I will usually start by asking you what has been happening for you, what has led to you thinking about psychological therapy and about some of your early history. I may also ask you to fill in some questionnaires if it is appropriate. This initial appointment will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions about how I work. At the end of the session, we can decide together whether psychological therapy will be helpful, what approach may be most beneficial and we will agree on some therapy goals.
The therapy process
The length of therapy varies from person to person. Some people may only require a small number of sessions. Other people need longer term therapy. Here are some ideas of what I may be able to offer:
Up to 4 sessions to develop a psychological formulation to better understand your current difficulties; a psychological formulation is a process of making sense of your current difficulties in the context of your life experiences to understand how these have shaped the way you are as a person. It is collaborative process during which the client and the therapist to generate hypotheses and ideas about areas that could be worked on in therapy.
Short-term therapy - up to 12 sessions
Longer term therapy - 13+ sessions
Therapy can take different forms for each individual. We are all unique and it is important that the therapeutic approach is a good fit for both the client and the therapist as this will facilitate an open and collaborative therapeutic space where positive change can be achieved. We can meek on a weekly basis or less frequently, depending on what works best for you. There may be occasions when it is necessary to meet weekly (e.g. during trauma-focused therapy).
