I am BACP (British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy) accredited. I trained initially as an Integrative Counsellor at the University of East London. I subsequently completed a Masters in Existential Psychotherapy at the New School of Psychotherapy & Counselling. I also have training and experience in Solution-Focus Brief Therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), Attachment Based Therapy and Schema Therapy.
In addition to working in private practice, I worked for fourteen years in a psychiatric hospital. I also spent six extremely rewarding years working as an addictions counsellor in various settings; including three years in a drug and alcohol treatment centre. I also spent three years working on a mentoring programme supporting recovering addicts working to rebuild their lives. I also have experience of working in a GP practice, Cruse Bereavement Care and for two years taught a course in ‘Counselling Theory and Practice' to undergraduates at Richmond University.
I have published papers on a range of issues, including: Human Development in ‘Existential Perspectives on Human Issues' (2005) Palgrave. (Edited by Emmy van Deurzen). Telling Lies - An Exploration of Self Deception in the ‘Journal of Counselling, Psychotherapy and Health' (2004). Meanings & Dimensions of Anxiety in the ‘Journal of the Society for Existential Analysis' (2003).
I work with a broad range of conditions and problems including; depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, sexuality, relationship breakdown, bereavement, substance misuse, etc. I have extensive experience of working with clients who present with self harming behavior such as drug or alcohol misuse, compulsive sexual behavior, self harm and suicidal ideation.
I currently work exclusively on-line via Skype. This is an extremely convenient and easy way to access therapy in the midst of a busy lifestyle or if you live in a remote location.
My aim is help client's explore their way of being and to clarify those aspects of life that cause distress, confusion, dissatisfaction or anger. Such feelings often lead to a sense of being stuck, unfulfilled and frustrated with life.
I also believe that it is important to consider the specific concern in the context of the individual's ongoing struggle to live authentically. For example; the presence or absence of meaning, and the role of choice and responsibility in one's life.
In exploring our thoughts and feelings about our current difficulties and concerns we move towards a better understanding and clarification and so begin to get a clearer sense of the options and choices before us.
