Julian Hayes

Welcome, my name is Julian Hayes, feel free to take the time to explore the information I have provided on this website.

I am a qualified Integrative Psychotherapist & Cognitive Behavioural, CBT Therapist, with a vast range of experience working within the NHS, Private, charitable and voluntary sectors. I offer a compassionate approach to the therapy that aims to assist individuals in creating the life they would like to live, while assisting them to come to terms with the losses and difficulties we can all experience in life. I am a accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), qualified and experienced to a high level of expertise with a broad range of experience of working with both psychological and physical difficulties. I currently work with individuals, couples and their families within the armed forces, veterans' community and the civilian population as a whole, while offering supervision for other therapist and health care professionals. I continue to research and study in new and adaptive ways in assisting people to move forward with their lives and have a special interest in relationship difficulties, addictions and trauma.

Background & Qualifications

My studies have taken me all over the world, looking at the art of healing from a number of different perspectives, both western and eastern. I have a BA (Hons) Degree in integrative counselling and psychotherapy, a diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, CBT and the compassionate mind approach. I have attained an additional level of expertise in psychotherapy including my BACP accreditation. In addition to these I have attained further psychological qualifications in sexual additions, gender studies, relationships, mindfulness and end of life training. To aid my understanding of the human experience and the way in which our minds and bodies respond to stress and trauma, I have qualified in, anatomy and physiology, massage, reflexology and adaptive yoga. These qualifications have given me a greater understanding of how we respond and heal from both our psychological and physical injuries. This level of training and experience has assisted me while working with clients who face the end of their lives, the trauma of war from, both a civilian and military perspective, the possible reasons for the many addictions and mental health issues some people experience.

My Specialisms

My areas of specialism are again varied, due to the differing roles and areas I have worked, I have developed a way of working that can be adapted to most psychological issues. The current areas I work in are with are trauma's such as PTSD. This is a well recognised mental health disorder within the veteran and military community but is relevant for a number of other traumatic experiences such as rape, sexual abuse and many more. Within this area, I work with such issues as loss and bereavement, not only of a loved one but in the case of an amputation, career and sense of identity loss. Frequently some clients may experience more than one psychological difficulty at a time, my approach enables me to manage the variety of additional issues such as, self harm, addictions and depression.

Approach to Therapy & How I Work

The model of Integrative Psychotherapy I practice encompasses the use of a range of psychological approaches to assist clients in their recovery. I work either on a one to one basis, couples, families or groups. I work either face to face or via skype or phone. The main approach is an evidenced based therapy referred to as, the compassionate mind approach, this approach is based on evolutionary responses and states that we all are doing the best we can with what we have. We have tricky brains to contend with, that sometimes respond to situations negatively, produce, thoughts, feelings and behaviours that hamper our abilities to live the life we would choose. The compassionate mind approach integrates, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, CBT with other approaches such as, Humanistic and Existential, I personally have a interest in gender studies and there influences with in society and look at individuals in there entirety. At times I will call on other methods of therapy such as, Multicultural therapy, transactional analysis (TA) Art and play therapy, Gestalt, and Neuro Linguistic programming. I do this as a way of embracing the inherent value of each individual. It is a unifying form of psychotherapy that responds appropriately and effectively to each person. This approach facilitates an environment that focuses on clients' specific therapeutic requirements.
