From around the world, there have been various references to the historical practice of ear candling, (thermo- auricular therapy) both to treat medical conditions of the ear, nose or throat, or for ritual and ceremony. Historically these have been described as made of material such as pottery, bark, fabric, or reeds.

The Modern candle or "Chimney" is made up of a fragrant combination of woven cotton, beeswax, honey extract, and herbs to form a hollow tube. There are various suppliers on the market. some candles with physical ear filters, some without.

The candles are usually sold in pairs, with both ears being treated. The person receiving the ear candling will generally lie on their side, while having the treatment (one side then the other) the candle is lit at one end, and the unlit end inserted into the ear canal, allowing the warmth of the flame to pass down the candle's hollow centre deeper into the ear canal. The warm air eventually meets colder air, and a vacuum effect is created, drawing out wax, and other debris that may be lodged in the ear canal. The movement and compression between the ear canal and the candle chamber generate air flow that functions like a chimney creating the sucking action.

The candles do not extinguish on their own, so a container of water must be readily available to put the flame out after use.

Ear candles are available in the UK for members of the public to buy and use. While the ear candling process itself is relaxing, and the effects may be beneficial, it should be noted that care must be taken to follow the instructions carefully to avoid burns, and fire. Professional therapists using these candles have had training in their use, handling, and safety along with appropriate insurance, therefore for safety and best positive results, the user should consider having the treatment facilitated by a trained therapist. If not, a partner should be available to hold the candle steady, while it burns down to the safety marker, and be on hand to extinguish it.

Each candle burns for about 10 to 15 minutes. After the ear candling is finished, the recipient may turn onto their back and relax for a while. If having the treatment from a qualified therapist, they may also benefit from a sinus drainage massage to boost the effects.

The 'chimney' effect of the candle helps regulates pressure within the ear, for example after air travel. If you want to try the treatment for the removal of excess earwax, the best results are gained by using either appropriate drops from the chemist, designed to soften the wax, or use warm olive oil. This softening of the wax makes its removal more effective.

Reported benefits include removal of ear wax, regulation of ear pressure, for example after in travel, reduction in the severity of tinnitus, and clearer sinuses.

For some people, the benefits can be gained after just one session, others need up to several.

Ear candling is not suitable for everyone. For example, if you have a perforated ear drum, ear grommets, inflammation of the inner ear, or are allergic to any of the ingredients listed on the packaging.
