Diane Adderley
Counsellor in Manchester

Hello,
I am a UKCP Registered psychotherapist, qualified in 1999 and in private practice, working with adults, ever since. My initial training was in psychodrama, an active and creative form of working with individuals and groups, which gets the body and the imagination going in the service of the client and their story. I am also a practitioner of NLP and EFT (Tapping). In addition, I've done trainings in gestalt therapy, person-centred counselling, contribution training and am a Senior Trainer in Sociodrama, a way of looking at the context within which the client lives and works: sometimes issues are more context-based than within the individual themselves. I have wide experience of working both long-term and short-term, through both private healthcare companies (such as BUPA) and EAPs (Employee Assistance Programmes - offering short periods of brief solution-focused therapy), as well as accepting self-referrals. I also completed my training in Brainspotting in 2019, a relatively new method of allowing the brain to process traumatic material without necessarily needing to tell the story out loud, based on recent research into how the brain works. I believe passionately in the importance of the narratives we tell ourselves and how we assign meaning to them and can live our lives according to them, whether they are useful to us or not. We parcel up our lives into stories which have beginnings, middles and, if not ends, at least 'the situation so far'. This is what I love to work with. I feel very privileged to have a job where people tell me their stories and we ponder them together, seeking more useful, sustaining ways of seeing ourselves and our world. I am also a life coach, organisational trainer and clinical supervisor.

My Specialisms

Stress reduction - I work with clients to identify the causes of their stress and the areas of self-care which are under-prioritised in their lives, helping design ways that the client can reduce their level of stress which are real, relevant and possible for them to incorporate into daily life.
Anxiety - I work with the physical symptoms of anxiety, using EFT (tapping) to calm the parts of the brain which are subject to racing thoughts. I teach relaxation techniques and introduce clients to mindfulness and meditation, developing the client's own ability to control and calm themselves when the self-soothing response has perhaps not been properly learned in childhood.
Trauma - I use NLP, psychodrama, Brainspotting and EFT methods to work safely with past trauma, always being aware of establishing safety and stability first before addressing the primary historical issues.
Depression - I work to help the client uncover the underlying causes and the self-story of the depression, surfacing the self-limiting beliefs which may result in poor self-esteem. Then we can start to change the internal dialogue.
Bereavement and loss - I help clients deal with any unfinished business with the person who has died, or the relationship which has been lost. I 'normalise' grief responses and assist in development of 'the new norm' - life without the missing person present
Relationship issues - I work with both couples and individuals to achieve desired change

Approach to Counselling & How I Work

Each individual I see needs their own bespoke therapeutic approach. Additionally, I see the therapeutic relationship as of prime importance, no matter what model of therapy is used. Initially, I have a short telephone conversation with a potential client, followed by a one-off hour-long face-to-face session (90mins. in the case of couples work), when we will meet and 'assess' each other. From my perspective, I want to hear what the client(s) want from the work, to hear their story, to get a sense of whether my skills will be of use here. From the client's perspective, there is an opportunity to get a sense of whether they could feel sufficiently comfortable and trusting with me to allow themselves to show their vulnerabilities and approach the scary land of personal change with me alongside them. After this initial session, we will decide together how to proceed. I usually offer three to six sessions as a beginning, to explore in more depth. This may be enough. Or it may be that more work is needed. The client is always in control - I will never attempt to coerce a client into having more sessions than they need, though I may challenge (gently) a client who is moving towards what I would see as a premature ending.

Additional Rate Information

Currently I offer a sliding scale from £70-£100/hr. We decide together what would be the right rate and frequency of sessions for you, depending on how you are, what you want from sessions and your circumstances. For instance, fortnightly appointments work very well for many people, in which case, on the lower rate of, say, £70, the weekly outlay would be £35. For those who feel a higher rate or weekly sessions is what they need, a higher hourly rate may feel appropriate. As an average, people often choose £85 as their hourly rate. I am not in the business of means-testing, and I know money can be hard to talk about, which is why I choose to establish it as a private collaborative discussion.
