Lucy Middleton Counselling

Lucy Middleton
Counsellor in Coventry

I am a registered Integrative Therapist in the UK with 6 years of professional work experience. Integrative means I use various different modalities depending on the issues a client may present with, for example Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is useful for identifying and challenging unhelpful thoughts and to learn practical self-help strategies. Whereas sometimes it is more appropriate to use a more open space approach, allowing the client to work through and reflect on their experiences in order to unpick them and make sense of them.

In my counselling career I have worked within a women's charity which was located in an area of low socioeconomic status. This meant that many of the women were impacted by having limited access to financial, educational, social and health resources and with this comes many different implications and barriers. Many of these women experiencing challenging childhoods and ongoing traumas and were stuck in this cycle. Working with these women allowed them to receive the support they needed to work through their traumas past and present and to feel more empowered going forward.

Currently, I am working for the NHS Talking Therapies as well as in in private practice where I contract out to BetterHelp. Through this work and my previous work at the women's charity, I have supported clients through grief, depression, anxiety, childhood traumas, sexual abuse, parenting issues, relationship issues, substance use by self/loved one... to name a few!

As a person-centred therapist, I allow the client to bring their agenda and listen without judgement. I believe that you are the expert of your own self and your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. I am here to support you in that process.

Approach to Counselling & How I Work

I am trained as an Integrative Therapist so I bring in different approaches as and when needed, for example, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be useful for the here and now helping to reprogramme unconscious thoughts that impact how we feel and therefore how we behave. This can be particularly useful for anxiety and depression.

In combination, many people want an open and non-judgemental space to share and reflect on their experiences to help them to process and better understand themselves. The greater our self-awareness, the more likely we are to make good decisions in life going forward. One of the aims of counselling is to raise self-awareness of our own roles in our lives and to make changes where needed - putting in boundaries with people or modifying our own behaviours where needed (these are just examples).

I aim to build a trusting therapeutic relationship - there is no judgement or opinions given, which allows for your own reflection process to take place.
