Mary Mcilroy
Counsellor in London

Welcome, Prior to my training as a counsellor, I spent several years in investment banking. Later, I retrained as a teacher and worked as a volunteer with Victim Support followed by voluntary work with teenagers in inclusive units. Working as a teacher and in these voluntary positions was a great introduction to counselling services which has provided me with a new sense of purpose. I now work as a counsellor / therapist in London Bridge (SE1) and in Muswell Hill (N10), both are within easy reach from Central London.

I believe it is important for me to offer my clients leading aspects of psychotherapy and counselling and hence I develop my skills on an ongoing basis. During 2014-2015 I completed 'Mindfulness' training and during 2015-2016 I completed further training in CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). In addition to addressing the issues listed in 'My Specialisms' below, counselling fundamentally has the ability to bring about change, explore each client's potential and find the direction they want to take in life.

Sadly there is no magic in counselling. I can't prescribe pills or lotions. There is no lying down on a couch with me sitting behind in a white coat with pen and paper in hand. Instead, we will sit in comfy chairs and you will do most of the talking. I do the listening and we will reflect on what comes out and find the 'right answer' for you.

Approach to Counselling & How I Work

I work as a psychosynthesis counsellor. This means I can provide simple and effective tools to help you enjoy good relationships with others and live the best life you can.
The counselling service I offer is bespoke to each client. This service sensitively uses dialogue and other techniques such as art, imagery, CBT and mindfulness to identify and help the client address the specific obstacles related to the issues they may be facing.

Amongst other things, I believe counselling helps you to use your mind to its maximum potential, be competent in your work, appreciate all that is beautiful and to stay calm in moments of crisis. Counselling helps to deal with external events which are outside of your control and to deal with internal feelings which overwhelm you and you can't find the answer to. And also when there is nothing specific to pin your unhappiness on, if life has simply lost direction or if you are struggling with any aspect of life, therapy can help.

I work in total confidentiality.
