I can work at the pace of the client or within a framework of sessions, or with an open ended contract, with individuals or couples. After the initial meeting my thoughts are about what will help the client. There are a number of levels to think about. One being a logical solution, second reflecting back to client some of the ways they behave or react, and thirdly the unconscious. All three are in motion simultaneously, so thinking about them engages my senses into how we work in our following sessions.
Counselling is a process, so between sessions the client is thinking, even unconsciously. This is the process which cannot be rushed. It is like a huge puddle spreading out looking for a level surface in which to settle.
My core training is Psychodynamic. I have since taken up additional training in Couple Work, NLP (Neurolinguisitic Processing) and CBT (Cognative Behavioural Therapy). Psychodynamic Counselling uses the relationship, and dynamic process between the client and counsellor. As the work proceeds so do these aspects, which in themselves help us understand behaviour. Woven into my work are aspects of CBT, NLP, and other styles of counselling,, used when felt appropriate. Because my focus has been on people and how we manage our life, I have devoted my career to client work. I am a Senior Accredited Member of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) practising as Counsellor/Psychotherapist for the past 15 years. I have an interest in trauma, an area which is often missed in ordinary life, unless discussing major events such as earthquakes etc. Every person with whom I have worked has taught me something about the human condition, because each individual has experienced life within their own framework. A theory can be helpful but nothing replaces the telling of their story of their life and how it was experienced by him/her.
I have worked with clients where some of the issues wished to be addressed were: Anger, Anxiety, Addictions, Bereavement, Eating Disorders, Family Issues, Health and Adjustment Issues, Low Mood (Depression), Loss, Pain Management, Relationship Difficulties, Redundancy, Self Motivation, Self Harm, Work and Lifestyle Issues, Etc. Etc.
For more than a decade I have worked with Young People, aged 11 to 18. When their whole life is before them, it can be confusing and terrifying. They experience pressure from all directions which can be hard to manage, overwhelming their ability to think things through. How do they find themselves or allow the process to take place, plus many other areas, anger being one, etc.
Respect and commitment to the work is essential even more so through the painful struggle of this journey. Advice is not given, but exploring what options may exist help in the process towards the client making their own decisions.
I work with individuals who want to engage in Open Ended Work, taking away any sense of haste, so there is no time pressure.
I work with individuals who for various reasons want to engage in Time Limited approach. We would agree on a number of sessions and a focus for an outcome of this piece of work.
I work with couples whether it is to mend the relationship or explore other options.
My skill is to help my client/s to face change, which will benefit their sense of wellbeing, so they can get on with their life.
