Rob Agnew
Psychotherapist in London

As a clinical psychologist I see clients with a range of disorders at all levels of severity. Typically I see patients who have been through other treatments, which they may have found useful, but which haven't fully resolved their issues. I am a committee member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) Section of Sexualities and a member of the BPS Practice Guideline Review board and the Mental Capacity Advisory Group. I have a strong background in autism, ADHD, self-harm, personality presentations and brain injury.

I am trained to use a number of approaches and I integrate these with my training as a psychologist to develop a psychological understanding (a formulation) which I test and adjust with my patient. I use my extensive background in neuropsychology, neurodiversity, systemic therapy and behavioural approaches to create a clear pathway for treatment.

If all you have is a hammer, all you see is nails. Sometimes what you need is to think from multiple therapeutic models, multiple perspectives and take multiple approaches to move a problem away from you.

Background & Psychotherapy Qualifications

I have a background in vocational rehabilitation, return to work and clinical hypnosis. Recently I have contributed a chapter to the text book 'Systemic Approaches to Brain Injury Treatment: Navigating Contemporary Practice' (Routledge, 2022) and regularly contribute to British Psychological Society media and publications. I frequently teach university masters and doctoral students in CBT and counselling psychology. As a gay cis-gendered man, and a proud trans ally, he interacts regularly with the LGTBQ+ communities, and has provided expert testimony on the standards of private treatment of trans youth for fitness to practice tribunals.

My Specialisms

I have worked in over 50 services since 2008, held various consultant level posts and set up services for the NHS. I have a broad skillset and like all clinical psychologists can work across the lifespan. I have highly developed skills in neurorehabiltition and brain injury. neurodevelopment/neurodiversity, autism ADHD and mental health presentations that occur in the context of brain injury and ADHD/autism.

Approach to Psychotherapy & How I Work

Clinical psychologists have trained to work in an integrated way, not just using models of psychotherapy but also drawing on our training in psychological science. My main modes of therapy are CBT, social constructionist systemic and RO-DBT approaches. I also use a lot of learning theory, non-punitive ABA approaches and positive behavioural support. I also have training in clinical hypnosis and often use this as a background to the more targeted model-based work.
