About me

Tony Larkin – Accredited Psychotherapist

Eleos Counselling, West Sussex

You don’t have to face things on your own.

If you’ve found your way here, there’s a good chance something doesn’t feel right. You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or searching for a way through a difficult time. Whatever has brought you here, you don’t have to carry it alone. Together, we can begin to make sense of what’s happening and work towards meaningful, lasting change.

At the heart of my work is a simple belief: people have far more potential than they often realise. Over time, many individuals find themselves caught in cycles of thinking and behaviour that feel difficult to escape. These patterns can shape how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and how we move through life. One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is seeing people begin to step out of these cycles — not through pressure, but through understanding, awareness, and change.

With over 10 years of clinical experience and more than 15,000 hours of therapeutic practice, I bring both depth and clarity to the work we do together. I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), a member of EMDR Europe, and a member of Addiction Professionals. These affiliations reflect my commitment to high standards of ethical practice, ongoing development, and delivering therapy that is both effective and grounded in current understanding.

My approach is rooted in a humanistic philosophy. I believe that you already hold the inner resources needed for growth and change. Therapy is about helping you reconnect with those strengths, increasing your awareness of how you think and feel, and supporting you to respond to life in a way that feels more aligned with who you are.

Often, people feel overwhelmed when they are not fully aware of the patterns they are repeating. These patterns are rarely random — they are shaped by earlier experiences and ways of coping that once made sense. In our work together, we can explore these patterns safely and thoughtfully, helping you develop a clearer, moment-by-moment awareness. As this awareness grows, so does your ability to make meaningful changes, and life can begin to feel more manageable.

At times, it is helpful to explore the roots of your difficulties. At other times, the focus may be on what is happening in the present — the here and now. I work carefully to understand what is most helpful for you, tailoring the process to your individual needs rather than applying a fixed approach.

Throughout my career, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families across a wide range of challenges. This includes supporting clients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance misuse, compulsive gambling, anger-related difficulties, eating disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). I have also worked with people facing terminal illness, bereavement, long-term disability, and the complex emotional experiences that can arise in later life.

In addition, I regularly support individuals experiencing low self-esteem, reduced confidence, and relationship difficulties, as well as those navigating work-related stress and major life transitions. My experience also includes working with clients living with HIV/AIDS and other ongoing medical conditions, and those who have experienced emotional abuse or engaged in self-harm. In more acute situations, I have provided crisis intervention, offering calm, steady support during times of significant distress.

My work is also guided by a strong interest in understanding the deeper causes of human suffering — not only what brings people into therapy, but why those difficulties persist. Over the years, I have integrated established therapeutic approaches with insights from contemporary research, allowing me to offer a way of working that is both grounded and responsive.

I do not believe there is such a thing as a “normal” problem. Every individual brings a unique life experience, shaped by their history, relationships, and circumstances. Because of this, the relationship we build together becomes the foundation of the work. The therapeutic relationship is, in my view, the most important ingredient for meaningful change.

My style is to engage, support, challenge, and motivate in equal measure. I aim to create a space that is safe, respectful, and free from judgement, where you feel able to explore your thoughts and experiences openly.

I am deeply committed to helping people reconnect with themselves and others. In my experience, connection is central to emotional and psychological wellbeing. When that connection is disrupted, life can begin to feel fragmented or overwhelming. Together, we can work to close the gap between where you are now and where you would like to be.

As Thomas Dreier wrote, “If ever we are to enjoy life, now is the time…” This belief sits at the core of my work. Therapy is not about fixing you — it is about helping you rediscover your capacity to live fully, with greater clarity, confidence, and meaning.

Taking the first step can feel daunting, but it is often the beginning of real and lasting change.

Specialisms

Over the course of my clinical practice, I have had the privilege of working with individuals, couples, and families across a wide range of emotional and psychological challenges. With more than a decade of experience and over 15,000 hours of clinical work, I bring both depth and breadth to the therapeutic process.

My work has included supporting clients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance misuse, compulsive gambling, anger-related difficulties, eating disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). I have also worked closely with individuals navigating terminal illness, bereavement, long-term disability, and the complex emotional challenges often associated with later life.

Alongside this, I regularly support people experiencing low self-esteem, reduced confidence, and difficulties rooted in earlier life experiences. I have worked with clients facing child-related concerns, relationship difficulties, and the impact of significant life stressors, including work-related pressures and emotional burnout.

My experience also includes working with individuals living with HIV/AIDS and other ongoing medical conditions, as well as those who have experienced emotional abuse or engaged in self-harm. In more acute situations, I have provided crisis intervention, offering steady and compassionate support during at times of significant distress.

I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), a member of EMDR Europe, and a member of Addiction Professionals. These affiliations reflect my commitment to ongoing professional development, ethical practice, and maintaining the highest standards of care.

Regardless of the difficulties you may be facing, my focus remains the same: to work alongside you in a way that is supportive, collaborative, and purposeful. Together, we will aim to help you better understand your experiences, reduce emotional distress, and move towards the goals that matter most to you.

My Approach

You don’t have to face things on your own.

If you’ve found your way here, there’s a good chance something doesn’t feel right. You may be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or searching for a way through a difficult time. Whatever has brought you here, you don’t have to carry it alone. Together, we can begin to make sense of what’s happening and work towards meaningful change.

Often, people feel trapped in patterns that seem to repeat themselves without fully understanding why. These patterns are rarely random. They are often shaped by earlier experiences and ways of coping that once made sense but no longer serve you. Through therapy, we can gently explore these patterns and help you develop a clearer, moment-by-moment awareness of your thoughts, feelings, and reactions.

As your awareness grows, so does your ability to respond differently. Life can begin to feel less overwhelming, and change becomes more possible.

Taking the first step into therapy can feel daunting. However, it is often the most important step towards creating the life you want. My approach is grounded in a humanistic philosophy. I believe that you already hold the inner resources needed for growth, healing, and change. Therapy is about helping you reconnect with those strengths and use them in a way that supports your wellbeing.

At times, it is helpful to explore the roots of your difficulties. Understanding where things come from can bring clarity and relief. At other times, the focus may be more on what is happening in the present — the here and now. I work carefully to understand what is most helpful for you as an individual, tailoring the work to your specific needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

The foundation of effective therapy is the relationship we build together. I aim to offer a space that is safe, respectful, and free from judgment. Within that space, I will support you, challenge you when needed, and encourage you to move forward at a pace that feels right.

I bring a genuine passion for helping individuals, couples, and families better understand themselves and their experiences. Over time, many people begin to rediscover parts of themselves that have been lost or pushed aside. With this comes a stronger sense of identity, direction, and emotional balance.

Therapy is not about fixing you — it is about helping you reconnect with who you are at your core. Through this process, many people find a renewed sense of meaning, confidence, and peace in their lives.
