When the Clouds Part You Can See Forever – finding clarity in life when the outlook is grey
The Johnny Nash classic reggae song I Can See Clearly Now came to mind this week when the clouds parted and temperatures sashayed to 18.5 degrees for some of us. Blue skies, warmth and suddenly things looked and felt different.
We suffer long, grey wet winters in the UK which demand reflection, hunkering and planning. A sunny day allows opportunities to seem closer and everything, practically and metaphorically, feels lighter. We could literally see clearly.
Some of us, however, suffer long grey winters with our thinking too. Our meteorological mindset stuck on foggy with chance of wet weekends and wash-out life choices.
One of my favourite ever quotes is – “When you have clarity you don’t need therapy” (Dr Robert Holden). I love its simplicity and its depth. Few of us live in full knowledge of what we want from life, ourselves and others.
Clouds of indecision and uncertainty make for a grim forecast.
If you have ever sighed – “I just sort of drifted into this job/relationship/situation” you will know that a rudderless ship usually rocks you up on a reef of mediocrity. If you’ve ever stayed far too long in a job or a relationship, when you should have bailed, you are not alone.
Procrastination is a common state of fear, doubt and blind hope that things will somehow just work out or miraculously improve.
Just think of the years lost waiting for things to “become clear” instead of actively finding clarity in life and choosing your direction with intention.
Getting Over Foggy Thinking
When you have clarity, you have purpose. You know why you get up and do what you do each day. Life makes sense; it has meaning. You feel in the flow, enabled and directional in what you say and do. When you know yourself, you know what you want and what is right for you.
When working with my students at the Pure Coaching Academy we explore the importance of a Values-lead life. Knowing who you are and what you stand for means you work and perform at your best. You are in alignment with your core strengths. Life feels right, light and rather lovely.
Your Values guide your vision.
Here are a few coaching questions to help with finding clarity in life when the clouds gather:
- What is the fear behind your hesitation?
- What truth have you known for a while but not said out loud?
- In 5 years from now what will you be grateful you did?
- Which of your Values could help you now and which ones need attention?
- What are you assuming or catastrophising?
- If you could wave a magic wand, what is the outcome you would like to see?
