Approach to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & How I Work

Clinicians work predominantly using a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This approach is collaborative, supportive and very practical and therapy will consist of face to face (or online) sessions in addition to tasks set for the client to complete in between sessions in order to practice and develop the new skills they learn in the therapy room.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is the NICE recommended treatment for depression and anxiety disorders which includes Panic attacks, health anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety, worry and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Techniques have also been proven to help people overcome low self-esteem, sleep difficulties, anger issues and some eating disorders.
CBT is a time-limited, solution focused talking therapy and people often report significant changes within about 6- 8 sessions. Cognitive behavioural therapy techniques teach you to change unhelpful thoughts and subsequent behaviours. Unlike some other talking therapies, CBT focuses on making changes in the here and now simply using the past to help inform us of why a person may be thinking or behaving in a certain way.
CBT focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, physiological changes and behaviour, helping you to challenge ways of both thinking and behaving leading to improved quality of life.
If you feel anxious about a certain situation, you may notice that by avoiding that situation, it maintains the feeling of anxiety. If you feel frequent low mood, you may be encouraged to record your thoughts and explore how you can look at them with a different perspective.
