Colin Craig
Counsellor in Belfast

Hi, i'm Colin Craig. I am the lead counsellor at Jygzaw Counselling, a UK wide remote counselling service I started and run. My motivation and belief is to give anyone suffering from mental health issues the hope and understanding that things will get better and by working together we can improve your life and take those positive steps forward. Having been through traumas myself, I appreciate the strength it takes in anyone reaching out for help and I offer a very informal and client focused approach.

Background & Counselling Qualifications

My counselling background really began when a very close friend attempted suicide. I had spoken often to this friend and when I heard the news of what happened I realised that although people may come across as absolutely fine on the outside, it's what's inside that matters, and allowing people to feel confident enough to talk about how they are feeling, how they are REALLY feeling, became the driving force in my life. I educated myself and spent the next 7 years developing my skills and experience through voluntary work with various charities until I felt ready to take the leap into counselling as a career change. I now hold Level 4 and 5 Diplomas in Counselling with Psychology and have taken many more individual specialist courses to complement my lived experience into a service I believe can make a difference to anyone suffering with their mental health.

My Specialisms

I am trained in all the main modalities of counselling and therapy and help with a lot of issues that face my clients. I specialise in abuse recovery, mainly sexual and substance, suicide therapy for both survivors and their families, bereavement counselling, client centred therapy, and relationship counselling. All Jygzaw's initial consultations are free and I offer free counselling to young people between the ages of 11 and 18.

Approach to Counselling & How I Work

My approach to therapy is very much client centred (Carl Rogers rocks!) I believe in using my lived experience to understand and really engage the client, letting them take the lead in the sessions with me in a supporting role. Creating the treatment plan and moving forward is always a joint effort between myself and the client. I encourage a relaxed and stress free atmosphere, fostering a "chat over a cuppa" approach, particularly in the early stages of the therapeutic journey. I am motivated into taking away the stigma of getting therapy and having people be relaxed enough to talk about their issues in a safe space. I really appreciate the strength and courage it takes to make that first step in reaching out for help.
