Hello!

My name is Anita and I am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for individuals and couples and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). I have experience of working with adults using both CBT and EMDR to help them overcome depression and a wide range of anxiety difficulties. I am an accredited member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). You will find me listed on the BABCP website under "Find a Therapist". Certification is available to view.

I can also offer CBT supervision to qualified CBT therapists and trainees.

I received my EMDR training from Alexandra Richman; having completed all 3 stages of training approved by EMDR-Europe Association (EMDR-E) and EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). Certification available to view.

Approach to EMDR & How I Work

CBT is a proactive talking therapy, based on scientific principles and backed by strong research evidence as a highly effective treatment of anxiety and depression. It approaches problems by looking at the relationship that exists between how we think, how we feel and how we behave. When a problem occurs in one of these areas, a vicious circle can develop and a problem can result as it perpetuates. This can become reinforced and a biased way of thinking about ourselves, other people and the world can develop.

In essence, how we think affects how we feel and what we do which can then affect how we feel and think, reinforcing original unhelpful thoughts, beliefs and ways of thinking.

It is a structured, goal orientated form of therapy that aims to provide you with the tools ("a toolkit") to overcome your difficulty and manage future ones. It does this by empowering you to draw on and develop psychological and practical skills and techniques. What is discovered in therapy is practiced and tested out of sessions as homework tasks.

Where helpful, we can look to earlier past experiences that may help inform problem development but this is not always necessary.

Homework tasks are an important part of CBT. Evidence indicates that people who carry out their homework tasks benefit most from CBT. By doing them you will be bringing about the change process and developing your toolkit for managing in the future: "becoming your own therapist".

Assessment and treatment

We can meet for a free initial 20 minute "meet and greet" consultation during which you we can learn a little bit about what it is you would like help with and have an oppertunity to meet each each other. There is no charge for this.

Your first appointment will be an assessment of your difficulty and last aproximately one hour and is chargeable. If we agree together that CBT would be the right approach, we will identify a target number of sessions subject to regular reviews to check if it is effective for you.

Sessions will be structured and focused on reaching your goals for therapy so you can achieve the best possible treatment results. Homework tasks are agreed at the end of each session. In the early stages this may involve collecting information that helps inform the assessment. This will then move on to tasks designed to change unhelpful thinking and behaviours and practising new helpful ones helping you on your way to becoming your own CBT therapist!

EMDR is a powerful psychological treatment for psychological trauma that was developed in the 1980's by American Clinical Psychologist Dr Francine Shapiro. Repeated distress and overwhelming traumatic experiences can become stuck in our memories with all the associated feelings and physical sensations. These are stored as unprocessed traumatic memories that then become continually triggered by experiences similar to the difficult ones originally experienced and bring about all the associated painful feelings and sensations.

EMDR is very effective with PTSD, trauma, abuse, phobias, low self-esteem and any anxiety based difficulty where there is a disturbing memory linked to the onset of the difficulty. It is one of the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recommended treatments of PTSD.
