Tessa Strickland
Psychotherapist in Bath

I was first attracted to psychotherapy a a young mother, over twenty-five years ago. I had no idea what to expect, but I know that I needed help in making sense of my world. It worked. Since then, psychotherapy has become integral to my way of life, helping me to understand myself better and to relate to others with more acceptance, insight and self-assurance. Psychotherapy has also helped me to develop aspects of my creative process that had previously been hidden. Finally, this work has deepened my understanding of human experience as part of a wider, deeper web of life that embraces all of the natural world, from seeds to stars, showing me how to live with greater respect for the earth and its creatures.

Background & Psychotherapy Qualifications

I am a graduate of Cambridge University and the Karuna Institute, Devon. I practise under the ethical guidelines of UKCP. My professional life has enabled me to travel extensively; I lived in Japan during my twenties and the culture of this country has had a lasting influence on me. My early psychotherapeutic work was in the Jungian tradition, and the work of C. G. Jung and his followers continues to inform my practice. However, my long-standing interest in eastern philosophical traditions led me to train as a Core Process Psychotherapist at the Karuna Institute. Core Process Psychotherapy is grounded in the practice of mindfulness, combining the insights of the Buddhist tradition with the perspectives of contemporary western psychotherapy and neuroscience. In Core Process Psychotherapy, we play close attention to the natural wisdom of the body and to the relationship between body, speech and mind. It is a multi-layered form of psychotherapy and one that can help people in many kinds of situations.

My Specialisms

I work with people from all kinds of backgrounds. I have a particular interest in working with relationship issues; with bereavement; with depression, including post-natal depression; with recovery from addiction; and with creativity. I also work with patients who were brought up overseas and seek a deeper sense of belonging in a culture that is not theirs by birth.

Approach to Psychotherapy & How I Work

I run a private practice from my home in rural north Somerset, five miles south of Bath. I also practise for two days a week in a peaceful setting in Marston, north Oxford. I offer an initial interview, which gives you the chance to meet me in person, ask questions and decide whether you feel comfortable about working with me. After this, we meet once a week for a one-hour session. We work at your pace, exploring whatever thoughts, feelings and sensations arise. Sometimes, this can involve working with art, dream material or movement. Together, we find out how you can express more of yourself in your everyday life and live in a more fulfilling way.

As well as practising as a psychotherapist, I work as a publisher and writer. My own journey has been shaped by an enduring interest in the relationship between creativity and spirituality and by a commitment to the transformative power of the creative arts.
