The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new sights, but in looking with new eyes—Marcel Proust

Mercury is between the sea and the shoreline, in the emotive sign of Cancer this week. Our vision may not be clear as the sea mists swirl around us. Today, Mercury begins to slow in preparation for his Retrograde Journey. Mercury Retrograde times are potent opportunities to explore the intimacy of our soul’s longing, to respond to the call of our imagination, to come home to ourselves, and to rest within.
Mercury or Hermes was patron of the journeyer. When we travel, we set off at a point of departure, and arrive at a destination. When we journey, we leave the space we know, we head out into unknown territory, we take a new path. We often find ourselves lost and alone.

Many of us may feel as if we are setting out on a new journey this week, as lock-down restrictions are lifted in many countries, and we enter a world that may feel contracted, disconnected, hidden behind masks.

Mercury Retrograde has become synonymous with travel plans going awry, computer glitches, misunderstandings, or projects put on the back burner for three weeks. As a celestial messenger, Mercury delivers surprises, annoying “accidents”, or joyous serendipity. What has been lost is found. We re-connect with a dear friend. An important piece of information comes to light.

There is nothing linear about Mercury’s reversal. We struggle with Mercury Retrograde cycles when we pedantically refuse to embrace holistic, intuitive thinking. When we forget that delays, set-backs or computer glitches are merely external signals to go within, to learn something new, to question our place of certainty, or to loosen and float for a while as we see the world with new eyes.

Every four months, Mercury stations and turns Retrograde. This week, we begin a new cycle through the element of water, emphasising that part of our birth chart where watery Cancer resides. Water shape-shifts and stirs up the sediment, carrying our fears and our holy longings. Cancer is the sign of home and family. This week we re-assess, re-affirm, those bonds of love that bind us to the friends that feel like sisters. To those soulful relationships we treasure in the secret chambers of our hearts. Our emotional yearning for connection in relationship will come to the forefront as we delve deeply into the submerged past.

Most astrologers would agree that these Mercury retrograde phases are wonderful times to revalue, revise, repair, relocate, relearn, regress, reunite, re-create, re-arrange, release, and on a purely physical level, to re-do. These are times to re-member, to “recall to mind” from the Latin, rememorari. Now is time to dredge up anything that has been unspoken or neglected.

Depending on where Mercury is natally and in transit in your own birth chart, these next three weeks until Mercury goes direct again on July 12th, may be a richly creative time. Practice positivity, step up the praise, the gratitude, look for the silver lining.

Remind ourselves that when we change our thoughts, everything else changes too.

In Love,
Ingrid
